Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1954, Dr. Kohr’s journey into the medical field began early. He earned his A.B. in Biological Sciences from Indiana University in 1975 before attending Indiana University School of Medicine, where he completed his M.D. in 1979 at age 24. His postgraduate training in general surgery and pathology laid the groundwork for a remarkable career dedicated to understanding the intricacies of life and death.
A Career Rooted in Forensic Expertise
Dr. Kohr has devoted much of his professional life to forensic pathology. He holds board certifications in anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology. His service as a medical examiner and coroner for multiple counties in Indiana and Illinois has placed him at the center of some of the most challenging and fascinating cases in the Midwest. His interactions have included agencies as small as town Marshalls, State Police, and the FBI.
Among his many accolades, Dr. Kohr served as Vigo County Coroner for four terms, contributing to investigations that brought closure to families and communities. His forensic expertise has also led him to serve as Laboratory and Forensic Medical Director for the Indiana Donor Network, where he ensures the highest standards in medical investigation and donor support.
A Teacher, Leader, and Advocate
Beyond the lab and courtroom, Dr. Kohr has been a dedicated educator, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of medical professionals. He has held academic appointments at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indiana State University Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, and the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also established a legacy of teaching with four different local nursing schools, while teaching subjects ranging from anatomy, to forensic pathology and criminology. His commitment to education extends to training Indiana coroners for many years. He currently serves as the only forensic pathologist, for several state committees focused on child and maternal mortality reviews.
Dr. Kohr’s leadership roles are equally impressive. He has chaired numerous hospital committees and served on the Boards of organizations like the Wabash Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Indiana Coroners Training Board.
